Public safety is the foundation on which every other freedom rests. When crime rises, small businesses close early, families change daily routines, and trust begins to fade. We owe our officers clear support and we owe our communities policies that prevent crime rather than celebrate slogans.
If a city chooses to defund its police department it should not expect federal taxpayers to fill the gap. Federal grants should reward communities that maintain staffing levels, invest in training, and report results. We should expand mental health units, crisis intervention training, and community partnerships that reduce repeat encounters. We should also modernize equipment so officers can de escalate situations and document encounters with confidence.
Respect is not blind. It is built on standards and steady leadership. I support transparent use of force policies, clear disciplinary processes, and due process for officers and citizens alike. When departments meet high standards they deserve the full backing of their elected leaders. When they struggle we should help them improve rather than strip away the tools they need to succeed.
A safer future is possible. That future looks like quicker response times, visible community patrols, and neighborhoods where children play without fear. It looks like prosecutors who enforce the law and courts that move with urgency. The people who run toward danger deserve a Congress that stands with them. I will.
